I spent the last week on vacation visiting my mom and sister in Ohio, who I haven’t seen in 3 years.

We had a great time. There’s something rejuvenating and therapeutic about getting away, even during the chaos of squeezing in all the stuff on the agenda.

But it’s important to remember that going away doesn’t have to mean taking a complete vacation from your healthy lifestyle.

I’ve had good intentions on vacations in the past and failed. This trip I focused on a few strategies that worked. Here they are:


Don’t stop exercising.

We did a lot of walking, but I also squeezed in a few 20 minute workouts at the hotel gym.

Whether it’s a hike, walk or bike ride, be sure to incorporate some movement into each day.


Travel with healthy snacks. 

It’s challenging to stick with your routine when you’re out of your environment. We knew we would be eating the majority of our meals out. My wife is a planner, so we had breakfast, lunch and dinner spots lined up.

It’s the between meals that’s tough. Especially when your children are relentless about asking for treats and snacks from every place you walk by!

So it’s best to come prepared with some healthy, convenient options.

For me, that was nuts and fruit.


Drink plenty of water. 

It’ll help keep you full between meals and hydrated. Save the calories for food!


Get plenty of sleep.

It’s easy to turn your vacation into a contest to see how many activities you can cram into each day.

But don’t forget about sleep. Sleep is recovery and will help you stay healthy and energized.

You shouldn’t come home from vacation feeling like you need another vacation.
