Starting a strength and fitness routine for the first time or getting back into the gym after a long time off can be daunting and frustrating.

Today, I want to address something right away, something that keeps a lot of us from returning to the gym (or even starting in the first place).

Gym anxiety.

That feeling of self-consciousness at the mere thought of walking into the gym, where your confidence plummets from the possibility of being judged.

I totally get it.

If you join a big commercial gym, you walk in and sea people scurrying about in this endless sea of stuff.

It’s easy to notice the people that attend regularly and tell this is their “thing”.

You may start to compare your body, performance and diet to these other people, which is discouraging.

Comparing your beginning to someone else’s middle is a sure way to stop you in your tracks.

You are the only person you are competing against. As much as you think people are watching you, they're not. They are focused on doing the work and improving. That’s exactly what you need to do as well.

Luckily, today you have more options than ever when it comes to exercise.
