Strength Training - Personal Training - Fitness

The Body is One Piece

In the early 90’s, I would lift weights 5 days a week, splitting up the body up by muscles - chest and triceps, back and biceps, legs, shoulders. I’d sprinkle in a little ab work and calves into the mix.

Why? Because bodybuilding magazines are where young lads got their training advice and that’s what they said to do.

Blasting one muscle group was great for putting on size, but it didn’t really integrate agility, speed, coordination, balance and all the other aspects of fitness.

In 1999, I did an internship with Juan Carlos (J.C.) Santana. J.C. was one of the people who brought “functional” training to the forefront. This changed everything for me. It taught me how to create a total fitness solution.

A good strength training program should enhance life.

We want to enhance everything from the sports you may enjoy - tennis, basketball, pickleball, competing in Ironmans…to everyday activities like carrying groceries, taking out the trash, putting dishes away, getting stuff out of the trunk of the car…and most importantly, keeping up with the kids and grandkids!

Life is movement!

And it takes muscles working together, not in isolation to create movement.

That’s why we create our programs built around these three things:

  • Full body training sessions

  • Standing (as much as possible)

  • Free weights (most of the time) - dumbbells, medicine balls, cable machines, resistance bands and the ultimate free weight - your body!

I’ve found this approach to training builds usable strength and protects the body from injury.
